How to make beeswax tea lights
What you will need:
1 lb pure beeswax (filtered)
½ cup coconut oil
#4 cotton or hemp wick
Wick fasteners
Scissors
Small muffin tin
Tin can or metal pitcher
Large pot that can fit your tin can
Newspaper to protect your space
Essential oils (optional)
Meat thermometer (optional)
STEP BY STEP
Step one: Prepare your space: layer your workspace with newspaper to avoid a mess
Step two: Melt the beeswax:
Option one: on the stove top - create a double broiler by placing the metal container into a large pot of water and bring it to boil over medium heat. Occasionally stir until the beeswax is completely melted.
Option two: oven - place the tin can in the warm oven at 180 degrees F with aluminum wrapped around the button to minimize any potential to spill
Step three: Prepare the muffin tin to pour candles
Dip the cotton or hemp wick into melted wax and hold it or lay it out straight to let it harden
Cut the appropriate length for each candle depth
Secure wick section in metal fastener (wait to place until you pour wax)
Step four: Prepare the wax to pour
Once the beeswax is completely melted at around 180 degrees F, remove from heat and stir in the coconut oil
{Optional} Add 30-50 drops of essential oils and stir for a few minutes to ensure the wax and oils are well blended.
Let the wax cool to around 150 degrees or when you notice the wax becoming more opaque
Step five: Pour your candle
Pour the wax into each cup individually
Quickly place wick with fastener in the center of each candle
Note: beeswax hardens fast so it is important to work quickly. If the wax gets too thick to pour just place back in the double broiler to melt again
Step six: Wait 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the size of your candles before removing the hairpins and trimming the wicks to light your candles
You can follow these instructions to repurpose old mugs, cups and jars around the house, make floating candles with walnut shells or carve small pumpkins into candles.. Note: You can purchase metal wick fasteners to secure the wick to the bottom of the container.
